Pandemic exceptions expire for airports in New York and Washington, D.C.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced this week that temporary waivers for international flight requirements are ending, starting with New York’s John F. Kennedy and LaGuardia airports and Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport. According to FAA regulation, if international airlines are unable to use their slots at busy airports at least 80% of the time, they will lose the slots.
The FAA began waiving this requirement in March 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic began. However, the FAA said current conditions do not “support a broad waiver of the minimum slot usage rules for all international operations or for carriers that may not operate for other reasons.” The waivers for these airport slots expire Saturday.
